I like to think that we learn our silence
from teachers and bullies
overprotective fathers
well-meaning friends saying
"Don't cry. Let's pretend it's alright."
like cement into a post hole
heavy, hard, weighing us down
making it so difficult to reach for another
I like to think that we learn our silence
and with the proper application of a jackhammer
we could break it up and spit it out
and yell with our very souls
after all we, all of us,
come into this world
screaming
